A just-released Tech-Clarity report, about the state of global manufacturers’ use of digital resources to achieve their business objectives, reveals a gap between understanding the need to implement the right tools to optimize productivity—and integrating those tools successfully.

The report, Integrating Data and Processes Across the Product Digital Thread, gathered and analyzed responses from 138 global companies that manufacture products or provide engineering services.

Survey results found manufacturers worldwide are increasingly using digitally-based systems for product design and production. With this shift comes further emphasis on better data integration for programs run internally and across supply chains.

Tech-Clarity
The state of integration among survey participants stretches beyond the department level in two-thirds of companies, but only about one-quarter are integrated at the enterprise level. Very few have extended their digital threads to the outside value chain. Source: Tech-Clarity, Inc.

“The current challenge is that most manufacturers don’t have fully integrated ERP, PLM, or supply chain systems, let alone integration across these and other domains that carry crucial product information,” says Jim Brown, founder and president of Tech-Clarity, which published the report. “Yet why have companies taken up the digital thread? Because achieving quality, efficiency, and better decision-making depend on it,” he notes. “Over two-thirds of the participants in the study report that integrating data and applications across the product digital thread is important or critical to meeting their business goals.”

“The next frontier in productivity is optimizing the digital enterprise,” says Eric Doubell, CEO of Razorleaf, which commissioned the independent study. “Companies have the data already in existing CAD, PDM, ERP and MES systems. Now they need to make the data readily available and seamlessly useable across domains, then apply this information in flexible, targeted ways to their specific product and business needs. Systems-agnostic integrators can help automate the interconnection of custom, native, and best-in-class tools, making it easier for departments and suppliers to communicate and make accurate and faster decisions.”

Tech-Clarity
Manufacturer’s most common goal for their product digital thread is to drive product quality—but also efficiency across their span of operations, including those downstream in traceability and service. Source: Tech-Clarity, Inc.

Hundreds of exhibitors will display the latest products and services, including fastening tools, adhesives, dispensing equipment, conveyors, robots, software and, automated assembly systems at The ASSEMBLY Show South, taking place May 1-2, 2024 at the Music City Center in Nashville, TN. Producers of the trade show, have nominated ten products showcasing the breadth and quality of new technologies to be part of the “Best in Show” contest. Attendees will be invited to vote for the best product during the show on Wednesday, May 1 and Thursday, May 2 and the winners will be announced on Thursday, May 2 at 12:30pm. Detailed descriptions and images of each of the following nominees can be viewed online.

  • Smart Workbench for Screwdriving by ASG, Div. of Jergens Inc. (booth 1237). ASG’s static-safe SmartBenches integrate seamlessly with a customer’s manufacturing execution system, which allowed a company to send work instructions directly to the benches and, in return, receive all the torque data from the screwdrivers for full lot traceability and quality control.
  • The smartCORE Automated Dispensing System by bdtronic (booth 1119). The system can simulate the dispensing process without requiring any axis movement, which saves time and reduces waste. The optional smartEDIT software extension allows engineers to quickly create and adjust dispensing parameters and programs. The user interface offers visual programming and real-time feedback to simplify program creation.
  • The GX-B Series SCARA robots by EPSON Robots (booth 743). The GX10B has a reach of either 650 or 850 millimeters and can handle a maximum payload of 10 kilograms. The GX20B has a reach of either 850 or 1,000 millimeters and can handle a maximum payload of 20 kilograms. The robots can be mounted to a table, wall or ceiling and can integrate seamlessly with Epson’s RC+ automation development software and are powered by the RC700E controller.
  • The ELT Vmax, leak testing system for battery cells, by Inficon (booth 754). Designed for installation in 19-inch racks, the ELT Vmax tests the tightness of battery cells filled with liquid electrolyte—whether lithium-ion or sodium-ion cells, prismatic, round and button cells with a rigid housing, or pouch cells with a soft, bag-like housing. The device detects electrolyte leaking from filled cells in a vacuum chamber.
  • XVL Studio software, to plan and simulate complex assembly processes, by Lattice Technology (booth 663). With the software’s ability to work with native 3D CAD data, manufacturers can drag and drop parts from their engineering bill of materials and build the assembly process tree. The software streamlines planning and ensures accuracy, since the data comes directly from the CAD system. New features have been added to increase the ability of the software to detect clashes and measure tolerances with CAD-level accuracy.
  • TensionCam by Momento International (booth 1123), measures clamp load in a bolted joint using a special sensor module. The module is equipped with a fingerprint sensor. But, instead of analyzing fingerprint patterns, the module, when docked to a bolt head, takes images of a precision machined pattern in a cavity of the bolt head. It then sends the information to the TensionCam app, which can make conclusions about bolt tension and clamp load based on changes in the pattern.
  • 3D Bin Picking for Automated Stud Welding by MS Automation (booth 937). 3D vision guidance enables a six-axis robot to accurately pick a stamped cap from dunnage that holds thousands of loose pieces. The robot places the cap into a centering fixture designed to precisely locate any cap size. (The caps are supplied in four diameters.) A SCARA robot introduces unfinished caps to the welding process and removes finished product.
  • Kaizen Copilot by Retrocasual Inc. (booth 519), is AI-powered, video-based continuous improvement software. The software enables industrial engineers to perform twice the work in half the time. All engineer’s need is a video of one cycle to rapidly optimize a manufacturing process or station design. The software automatically analyzes video from a workstation, identifies areas for improvement, and provides actionable recommendations.
  • Genius 2 System by Rhino Tool House (booth 917) consists of autonomous wheels that transform carts, skids and tables into self-driving robots. The system is deployed in sets of four or eight wheels, with one wheel acting as the central “brain,” leading and synchronizing with the other wheels. Genius 2 uses smart indoor navigation technology. LiDAR sensors provide a 360-degree field of view, supported by 3D and ultra-wide lens cameras.
  • RoboRiv by RivetKing (booth 712) is an electric rivet-nut setting tool for robotic automation. The tool attaches to any robot. The tool is equipped with force and distance sensors to ensure consistent clamp load and error-free installation of rivet-nuts and rivet-studs. A force-control feature helps prevent spin-out of fasteners. Real-time data collection provides visibility into issues like over- or under-tightening.

The ASSEMBLY Show South will be co-located with the Quality Show South and together will bring thousands of buyers and end users to see the latest equipment, products and technology with the most cutting-edge, top-of-the-line tools to streamline the manufacturing processes. Japan faces a labor shortage impact in 2024 as new overtime regulations for truck drivers come into force. This is being called the ‘2024 problem’ – its potential disruptions need technological help. The world´s number one country for manufacturing robots is developing automation strategies that will not only target logistical issues but also a wide range of industry challenges the new working time legislation will cause.

“The government´s overtime cap is an important step to improve working conditions for employees,” says Takayuki Ito, Vice President of the International Federation of Robotics. “Industrial and service robots deliver great solutions to automate. Robots relieve workers of dirty, dull and dangerous work and help to close productivity gaps.”

Robots load and unload cargo

In Japan, the average annual working hours for a heavy truck driver were 2,568, which is 444 hours longer than the national average for all jobs – labor ministry data from 2022 reveal. Placing cargo in and out of trucks and warehouses is one of the most time- consuming tasks of truck drivers. Mobile robot solutions in transportation and logistics can help. To free up truck drivers from loading and unloading cargo saves them up to 25% of working time during a day´s shift. Robots also help reduce errors in order fulfillment by automating repetitive tasks such as picking and packing.

Speed up warehousing

Warehouse robots in use today range from compact autonomous mobile models to large-scale automated storage and retrieval systems. Their use reduces the amount of time required to move goods and they can handle heavy loads and dangerous materials without putting human workers at risk.

Professional service robots are booming

The benefits of robots for transportation and logistics are documented by latest statistics: on a global scale, more professional service robots were built for the transportation of goods or cargo than for any other function. Sales grew by 44% with more than 86,000 units sold in 2022 worldwide, IFR reports.

Workplaces of the future

“Regulations of overtime work and the demographic change will require the adoption of automation technology in many branches of the Japanese economy,” says Takayuki Ito. “The challenges of the trucking industry are good examples to show how robotics and automation deliver adequate solutions for our workplaces of the future.”

About IFR
The International Federation of Robotics is the voice of the global robotics industry. IFR represents national robot associations, academia, and manufacturers of industrial and service robots from over twenty countries: www.ifr.org

The IFR Statistical Department provides data for two annual robotics studies:

World Robotics – Industrial: This unique report provides global statistics on industrial robots in standardized tables and enables national comparisons to be made. It presents statistical data for around 40 countries broken down into areas of application, customer industries, types of robots and other technical and economic aspects. Production, export and import data is listed for selected countries. It also offers robot density, i.e. the number of robots per 10,000 employees, as a measure for the degree of automation.

World Robotics – Service: This unique report describes marketable products, tasks, challenges and new developments by service robots application. The report includes the results of the annual IFR service robot survey on global sales of professional and consumer service robots and an industry structure analysis including a full list of all service robot producers known to the IFR. The study is jointly prepared with the robotics experts of Fraunhofer IPA, Stuttgart.

How many software companies provide free advanced training to their customers dozens of times each year for 15 years straight? Global Shop Solutions, a leading provider of ERP software for manufacturers, does. In fact, they have been doing so for 15 years with Friday Features, a high-level ERP training webinar helping customers simplify their manufacturing by continually improving their ERP skills.

Friday Features live webinars are open to all Global Shop Solutions customers at no cost. Led by Global Shop Solutions’ most experienced ERP consultants and trainers, the webinars provide in-depth training on one specific topic each week. Each webinar covers a core feature of the software such as job costing, inventory management and scheduling as well as automations, integrations, customizations, and other features that improve shop floor efficiency.

“I can’t tell you how excited I get when a Friday Features season rolls around because it means I’m going to jump out of bed, arm myself with a double Starbucks, and spend an hour fielding comments and answering questions with people this company is proud to have as customers,” says Dusty Alexander, Global Shop Solutions President and CEO. “There’s nothing I like better than spending time interacting with customers every Friday morning. In fact, it’s the best hour of my entire week.”

Friday Features was created by Langley Melendres, Senior Consultant, as a way to deliver “bite-sized continuous improvement” to the company’s new and long-term software users. She had no idea it would become one of the most popular training programs in the company’s 45+ year history.

“The value of Friday Features is reinforced by the consistent user attendance,” says Melendres. “Each webinar is available for viewing for a week after the live event, and many of our customers use Friday Features to help train their new hires.”

After 15 years, the company has seen ERP skills and confidence grow in manufacturers. The weekly training is one of the easiest ways for manufacturers to stay up to date on the software that drives their business. And the webinars provide significant value to Global Shop Solutions, too.

“I don’t know of any other company that puts their CEO, head trainer, and head customer success manager in a ‘live fire’ situation in front of hundreds of customers every week,” says Alexander. “Every session there’s something new and cool we’re doing at Global Shop Solutions – something core in the system that we believe our customers could capitalize on learning. We always learn something in return, and that feels good.”
