The CERATIZIT UP2DATE catalog is now available, showcasing the latest product developments and advancements for the cutting tool industry. Designed to help customers optimize machining performance, extend tool life, and maximize production efficiency, this edition features tooling solutions tailored to meet intricate milling and micromachining operations. Included in the spring 2025 UP2DATE edition are the MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX milling cutter, the MaxiMill – Tangent milling cutter, and the WTX – Micropilot micro drill.

“Customers come to us for more effective and productive cutting tools which we deliver with support and technical expertise,” says Troy Wilt, Managing Director of CERATIZIT USA. “Applying our technical expertise in the field often leads to new and better solutions that work across multiple industry sectors.”

Groove milling made easy

The MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX is a robust side and face milling cutter system that is engineered for exceptional performance across a range of materials, including steel, cast iron, and aluminum. The innovative tool is designed to deliver soft cuts while effectively avoiding interfering contours, making it an ideal solution for diverse milling applications.

The MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX features trouble-free contours on the face side and sufficient axial freedom of movement that ensure smooth machining — even in hard-to-reach areas. Thanks to precision-ground indexable inserts, machinists can expect a flat groove base that ensures perfect surfaces from the very first cut. The system is also equipped with an internal coolant supply up to a diameter of 200 mm, which minimizes chip jamming and further boosts efficiency.

The MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX is available in three models to offer the most universal connection on the market. These slip-on milling cutters offer diameter ranges from 80mm to 200mm each of which include internal coolant supply, and multiple sized cutting widths. The screw-in milling cutter also provides an internal coolant supply on diameters of 50mm, 63mm, and 80mm and cutting widths of 6mm and 8mm. The milling cutter with cylindrical shank and internal coolant supply is available to CERATIZIT customers in diameters of 50mm, 63mm, 80mm and 100mm as well as cutting widths of 6mm and 8mm.

Better reach and pace

The MaxiMill – Tangent is CERATIZIT’s new tangential indexable milling cutter designed for machining hard-to-reach steel or cast iron components. Engineered to deliver stable and soft-cutting machining, it provides a uniform chamfer profile over the entire length of the cutting edge for maximum stability within a single system.

The MaxiMill – Tangent has indexable inserts optimized for machining ISO P and ISO K materials. Moreover, it features a maximum infeed depth of 8 mm for the -09 insert, while the larger model goes even further to 12 mm. The MaxiMill – Tangent includes universal -M50 and -F50 chip breakers, offering enhanced cutting-edge stability due to a reduced radial clearance angle.

Furthermore, there is an integrated face-cutting edge, which offers machining benefits, including uniform material removal that results in a smoother component surface. In addition, the cutting forces are distributed more evenly and reduce the load on both the tool and the machine.

The MaxiMill – Tangent is available in three mounting styles: shell mill, screw-in cutter, and straight shank. Cutter diameters range from 25mm to 125mm. The large and stable contact surfaces in the integrated carrier inserts carrier provide additional stability and reliability. Plus, compared to radial systems, tangential clamping provides extra space for significantly more indexable inserts on the milling cutter body, thus guaranteeing maximum cutting-edge density and efficiency. Inserts can be rotated, turned, and replaced quickly and easily to prevent any drop-offs in efficiency during tool changes.

A complete micro drill system

The WTX – Micropilot is an innovative micro drill used for spot drilling small components with intricate geometries. Working in tandem with CERATIZIT’s WTX – Micro, the pilot drill is small in stature and delivers big performance with exceptional accuracy and time-savings for micro-sized components.

The risk of micro-sized components becoming scrap is high. Several things can go wrong: drills run off, drill holes get crooked, tools break, and the workpiece itself can become damaged. With a special drill point angle of 160 degrees, the WTX – Micropilot guarantees maximum positioning accuracy and prevents wandering while drilling to achieve extreme precision within a single run. Since it is designed to co-drill with the WTX – Micro, the usual mirroring required for drilling inclined and curved surfaces with an inclination up to 50 is no longer necessary, saving time and tool changes.

Additionally, the WTX – Micropilot is coated in CERATIZIT’s innovative Dragonskin for optimum chip clearance and extended tool life. It also has spiral internal cooling channels to ensure maximum flow of cooling lubricant for improved surface finish.

To ensure the safe, effective and efficient transfer of plant equipment into the basement energy room of a new residential tower block in London, a major construction project leveraged the advantages of appointing Hoist & Winch Ltd as its supplier of turnkey lifting equipment. Tasked with meeting the requirements of a technically challenging brief, Hoist & Winch demonstrated why it has become the nation’s go-to solution provider of high-quality lifting systems.

Many new tower block development projects face a common challenge: how to install large, heavy pieces of equipment into the building’s energy centre, typically located in the basement. Specifying the optimal hoists is paramount to project success. Fortunately, the subcontractor supplying and installing the energy room’s plant for this particular project knew where to turn for a turnkey lifting solution: Hoist & Winch Ltd.

Hoist and Winch
William Hacket low-headroom manual hoists were installed to overcome the issue of very tight headroom clearances due to the size of the equipment.

Hoist & Winch has extensive experience in all kinds of construction and industrial lifting applications. The company offers sales, installation, service, inspection, repair and hire services, with a special emphasis on project work. Supplying the optimal solution, with safety as the number one priority, is always the objective.

During the design phase, after formal tender and contract award, Hoist & Winch set about identifying the optimal solution by carefully assessing the specific lifting requirements. The project required the installation of hoists on both the upper and lower ground floor levels to ensure the successful lifting and transfer of large energy plant. It was clear from the outset that the solution would need to overcome the issue of very tight headroom clearances due to the size of the equipment.

Hoist and Winch
Offering a safe working load of 2.5t each, the hoists provide 8m of lifting height and run on beam lengths of 8.5m and 7.0m.

After thoroughly considering all aspects of the project, Hoist & Winch Ltd was able to put forward its proposal, recommending two William Hacket low-headroom manual hoists, both with a hand-geared trolley. Offering a safe working load (SWL) of 2.5t each, the hoists provide 8m of lifting height and run on beam lengths of 8.5m and 7.0m.

Hoist & Winch duly submitted its design proposal, including drawings and structural calculations, for approval by engineers at the main contractor. Following approval, the company commenced manufacture before delivery to site.

During the installation phase, Hoist & Winch tested the installation anchor points to 1t before raising each beam into position using hand chain blocks. Elevating the beams to full height and clamping them hard against the concrete ceiling ready for drilling required the use of special lifting rigs. Once in position, the company proceeded with drilling operations and resin anchor installation for all ceiling anchor points after meticulously cleaning each hole with a special heavy-duty internal brush and suction pump. Following the specified resin curing time, Hoist & Winch tightened each anchor bolt to the required torque levels.

Hoist and Winch
Hoist & Winch Ltd recently installed hoists for the successful lifting and transfer of a large energy plant within a residential tower block.

LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) inspection of the lifting beams and manual chain hoist units was the final operation. This activity included dynamic load testing of both beam lengths with a 2.5t skid-mounted test load followed by 125% static proof load test in accordance with BS 2853 2011. As a point of note, following customer handover, the hoists were to remain in place for use by the on-site maintenance team.

“We provided the client with a comprehensive project records and documentation package upon completion of works, which is standard practice,” says Hoist & Winch Director Andy Allen. “We then went through the handover process to ensure total peace of mind for our client. At Hoist & Winch, our focus is on ensuring customers benefit from our exceptionally knowledgeable team who never fail to deliver on their promise of providing a detailed and proficient approach to every project.”

It is not uncommon for industrial boilers to face periods of downtime for construction, seasonal layup, or other reasons. It is also not uncommon for these to be the most vulnerable times for corrosion. While Cortec boiler layup “reptiles” serve as excellent guardians against oxidation, it is important to know several “tricks of the trade” to get the most benefit from them. Several of those best practices recommended by Cortec Certified Water Technologist, Scott Bryan, are highlighted in the tips below.

Tips for Standard Boiler Layup

CortecThe Boiler Lizard® is ideal for dry layup of boilers 1,000-10,000 gallons (3,800-38,000 L) in total volume. When slit open along the top, within two inches of each end, this yard-long (94 cm) water-soluble tube of Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors releases corrosion inhibiting vapors that diffuse throughout the boiler enclosure, forming a protective layer on all metal surfaces.

Boiler Lizard® Tip One: Do not place the Boiler Lizard® in areas of standing water, since this could cause the material to clump together and be more difficult to remove later. Normally, the Boiler Lizard® should dissolve and rinse easily away when refilling the water side.

Boiler Lizard® Tip Two: If the boiler is large enough to require multiple Boiler Lizards, place half of them in one end of the boiler and half in the other end (e.g., steam drum and mud drum). This will allow the corrosion inhibiting vapors to diffuse more quickly and evenly throughout the entire boiler volume.

Tips for Tight Spaces

CortecBoiler Gecko™ comes in an air-powered spray can and contains enough Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors to protect 100 gallons (380 L) of volume per can.

Boiler Gecko™ Tip One: Use the Boiler Gecko™ to preserve smaller boilers, steam lines, deaerators, or fire sides where it would not be practical to place the Boiler Lizard® (Boiler Gecko™ typically does not need to be removed before startup, even when used in the fire side).

Boiler Gecko™ Tip Two: If your access hole is very small (e.g., 0.5-2 inches [1-5 cm]), use a diffuser attachment on the end of the can to fit the opening and avoid corrosion inhibitor blowback.

Tips for Preserving Large Boiler Volumes

The Boiler Dragon™ contains the same chemistry as Boiler Gecko™ but is designed for large volume application, including HRSG layup.

Boiler Dragon™ Tip One: Use a low-pressure, high-volume pump or sprayer to apply as much product as possible as quickly as possible. (Using a high-pressure, low-volume sprayer will take too long.)

Boiler Dragon™ Tip Two: Make sure there is another opening at the other end of the boiler from where you are applying it. For example, if you fog Boiler Dragon™ into the steam drum at the top of the boiler, keep the mud drum at the bottom open until the fogging fluid starts to come through. Then close the mud drum, finish the dose, and close the remaining opening.

Transforming Boiler Layup

Cortec boiler “reptiles” have transformed the industry’s approach to boiler layup by replacing desiccants and nitrogen purge with efficient, reliable solutions. While selecting the right treatment is the first step, knowing the best practices for effective layup is close behind.

Cortec® Corporation is the global leader in innovative, environmentally responsible VpCI® and MCI® corrosion control technologies for packaging, metalworking, construction, electronics, water treatment, oil & gas, and other industries. Our relentless dedication to sustainability, quality, service, and support is unmatched in the industry. In an era when environmental consciousness is paramount, the lubricant industry is emerging as an unexpected champion of sustainability. Contrary to popular belief, lubricants can indeed be “green,” offering significant environmental benefits while enhancing equipment performance and efficiency.

Holistic Approach to Green Lubricants

While traditional definitions of environmentally friendly lubricant focus on biodegradability, low toxicity and non-bioaccumulation, a more comprehensive view reveals multiple facets of sustainability. Properly formulated lubricants contribute to energy conservation by reducing friction, which leads to decreased energy consumption and extended equipment life. High-performance lubricants can be formulated to last longer, promoting resource efficiency by reducing waste and conserving resources.

Advancements in technology have enabled the production of stable lubricants from renewable vegetable, animal and algae sources, expanding the options for sustainable lubricant bases. Additionally, modern re-refining processes can transform used lubricants into high-quality base oils, creating a “closed loop” system that supports recycling and reuse initiatives.

Beyond Biodegradability

lubricantsWhile biodegradability remains a crucial aspect of green lubricants, industry professionals should consider additional factors to fully assess environmental impact. Ecotoxicity measurements help determine a lubricant’s potential harm to environmental organisms, providing valuable insight into its overall ecological footprint. Bioaccumulation assessments evaluate the tendency of a substance to accumulate in living organisms over time, which is critical for understanding long-term environmental effects.

Furthermore, embracing cradle-to-cradle design principles encourages the development of circular product lifecycles through intelligent design and manufacturing processes, promoting sustainability throughout the lubricant’s entire lifespan.

Business Case for Green Lubricants

Adopting sustainable lubricant practices isn’t just environmentally responsible—it’s economically sound. A well-implemented lubrication program can significantly enhance equipment uptime and efficiency, leading to improved equipment reliability and reduced operational costs. High-quality lubricants capable of operating for longer periods contribute to extended drain intervals, reducing maintenance costs and resource consumption.

Moreover, lubricants that effectively reduce friction can lead to measurable decreases in power consumption, translating to significant energy savings and cost reductions for businesses. This alignment of environmental and economic benefits makes a compelling case for the adoption of green lubricant practices across industries.

Implementing a Green Lubrication Strategy

To maximize the sustainability benefits of lubricants, businesses should consider implementing these lubrication reliability best practices:

  1. Employee training
  2. Proper filtration and contamination control measures
  3. Oil analysis program to optimize drain intervals
  4. Automatic lubrication systems for improved efficiency

Conclusion

The lubricants industry stands at the intersection of environmental stewardship and operational excellence. By adopting a holistic view of green lubricants—one that considers their entire lifecycle and performance benefits—businesses can simultaneously reduce their environmental impact and improve their bottom line.

Few welding automation suppliers know shipbuilding as well as Pemamek Ltd., a leader in automated welding systems used by the largest shipbuilders in the world. In keeping with its commitment to pioneering new technologies that solve customers’ toughest challenges, Pemamek has developed the PEMA Vision 3D software specifically for flat panel welding applications prevalent in shipbuilding. Signaling a big leap in flat panel welding automation, Vision 3D software solves multiple challenges faced by shipbuilders including inconsistent workpiece dimensions, weld quality and skilled labor shortages.

Vision 3D’s modeling function, featuring customized defaults for faster weld path development, creates accurate 3D models using data gathered by weldpiece scans. Welding schedules are met with little or no delay, keeping the shipbuilding operation moving efficiently. An intuitive, easy-to-use interface enables team members at any skill level to learn the software, an especially valuable feature that enables manufacturers to meet the challenges faced when there is a lack of skilled workers on-site. Additionally, shipbuilding sites can be hazardous workplaces with personnel performing welds within closed or close-knit spaces with harmful fumes resulting from weldpiece materials. A Pema automated welding solution equipped with the Vision 3D software allows the welder to move out of these spaces and into the operator’s seat for a healthier work environment.

Pema Vision 3D seamlessly connects with existing Pema automated welding systems for continuous workflow, including the PEMA Vision Robot Welding Portal (VRWP) for shipyards, a compact system developed for micropanel and sub-assembly welding. Due to its size, the VRWP can be commissioned and ramp up completed in just one week, with another week necessary for training. The VRWP series comes equipped with PEMA’s WeldControl 200 software and is fully compatible with the Vision 3D software. Together, PEMA Vision 3D software and the VRWP series of robotic welding portals offer shipbuilders the ideal solution to micropanel and sub-assembly welding challenges often experienced during large structure manufacturing processes.
